Recently @dane22, who maintains the Sub-Zero Wiki, came to me and asked whether I could re-arrange the display order of Sub-Zero preferences in the plugin's settings screen to a more categorized one, to make it easier to create the Wiki pages.
He is thinking about something like this:
1. basic settings
2. providers
3. sub settings
4. scheduler
I've followed a simple ordering scheme with the settings screen til now: see the things first that you need for SZ to function properly as a new user, ignore the rest (as the defaults are good). In my opinion SZ should work out of the box, without many adjustments for 90% of the 20.000 active users. For the advanced stuff one eventually has to visit the Wiki.
My problem with the new approach is, that it requires every user to see every setting at first usage and possibly think about them, trying to understand whether they need to fill it out now or not, possibly scaring them or leading to bad decisions.
In addition to that, I would love the approach if I had more control over the preferences screen, like tabs, or an "advanced mode" switch.
I understand the approach from the Wiki point of view, and for advanced users it might be a more logical order.
What do you think? Do you perhaps have another proposal?
